Captain of the RCB: In a significant development ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have appointed Rajat Patidar as their new captain, succeeding Faf du Plessis. This strategic move aims to infuse fresh leadership into the team as they pursue their inaugural IPL title.
Captain of the RCB: Rajat Patidar’s Ascendancy
Rajat Patidar, a right-handed top-order batter from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has been a part of RCB since 2021. Over the years, he has evolved into a pivotal player for the franchise. His consistent performances in domestic cricket and the IPL have showcased his potential as a leader. Notably, Patidar has also captained Madhya Pradesh in domestic tournaments like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy, further cementing his leadership credentials.
RCB’s head coach, Andy Flower, expressed confidence in Patidar’s leadership qualities, stating, “I think that quality within him will be really important for him through the inevitable ups and downs that should come along with playing in the IPL and stepping up another gear and leading a big franchise in the IPL.”
Transition from Faf du Plessis
Faf du Plessis, who led RCB from 2022 to 2024, has been released by the franchise and subsequently joined the Delhi Capitals for the upcoming season. Under his leadership, RCB reached the playoffs but fell short of clinching the championship. The decision to appoint Patidar is seen as a forward-looking move to build a team for the future.
Virat Kohli’s Endorsement
There was widespread speculation that former captain Virat Kohli might reassume the leadership role. However, Kohli has expressed his full support for Patidar’s appointment, emphasizing the importance of nurturing new leaders within the team. He stated, “I’ve done it for many years… It’s time for the next generation to take over, and Rajat is the right choice.”
